Mum Care and Tips for a Thriving Home and Garden

Every year, we hear the same question: "Are these hardy mums?" My answer is always the same: it depends on how you care for your mums! It's not just about whether a mum is labeled as "hardy"; factors like your location, care routine, and planting timing play crucial roles in their survival. Let’s explore how you can help your mums thrive year after year.

Plant Early for Best Results

One of the most important steps in mum care is planting them early, preferably before they start to bloom significantly. This allows the roots to develop more fully in their new environment, increasing the plant's chances of survival. The deeper and healthier the roots, the better the mum will do in the long run.

Deadheading for Continuous Blooms

As your mums settle into their new home, remember to regularly pinch off the dead blooms. I like to do this daily; it’s a simple task that encourages the plant to produce fresh, vibrant flowers for the entire season. Keeping the plant tidy not only enhances its appearance but also promotes further growth.

Watering Wisely

Mums enjoy well-drained soil, so it’s important to keep an eye on your watering schedule. Overwatering can be just as harmful as underwatering! Typically, you should water about three times a week, but be mindful of weather conditions—windy days might necessitate extra care. We recommend watering in the morning to avoid leaving your mums wet overnight. A quick finger test can help: if the soil feels damp, hold off on watering; if it’s dry, give them a little drink.

Choosing the Right Spot

When selecting a location for your mums, keep a few key points in mind. Mums thrive in sunny areas—avoid shady spots if you want them to flourish. Additionally, planting on the east or south side of a structure can provide protection from cold northern and western winds, helping to keep the ground from freezing too deeply.

Preparing for Winter

Once your mums have experienced a killing frost and the stems begin to lose color, it’s time for some winter prep. Trim them down to about an inch above the ground and cover the area with 4 to 6 inches of mulch. This insulating layer will protect the roots from the cold. Consider placing a small marker or flag to remind you where to brush back the mulch come spring, helping the plants emerge from the soil.

Boosting Bloom Power

When planting your mums, be sure to incorporate some super phosphate to keep those blooms looking vibrant throughout the season. Many resources are available to help you recognize when your plants need additional phosphorus, ensuring they remain healthy and beautiful.
